POROUS MATTER
A performance by Anna Anderegg in collaboration with the University of Zurich

POROUS MATTER is an interdisciplinary performance that investigates the permeability—the porosity—of the body and explores its relationship to organisms beyond the human: as an open web of relations, permeated by microbes, data, and resonances.

Over the past decades, many fields of research have developed a growing awareness of the interconnectedness and mutual dependence of biological organisms and systems. In this context, a new perspective on the human body has also emerged: like all ecosystems, our bodies are not closed entities but porous, constantly engaged in exchanges with their surroundings. What does this mean for how we imagine our bodies—and for our being-in-the-world? These questions have been explored by Anna Anderegg in collaboration with an interdisciplinary team of scientists and artists.

In POROUS MATTER, the body is approached as an archive inscribed with evolutionary memories, fossil traces, and microbiological histories. The body becomes a landscape—inhabited by microbes, fungi, and cellular colonies that shape our metabolism, our perception, and our existence. New technologies render these entanglements visible and tangible, reminding us that we are connected beings, that we are “nature.” Yet this also means that species extinction affects not only our external habitats but also the inhabitants within our own bodies—organisms on which our lives depend.

The performance further addresses the difficulty of reconciling these insights with lived reality—as members of a society that imagines humanity as separate from “nature” and positioned as its master. How do we navigate this involuntary complicity?

HopeMe
The artist Anna Anderegg stands in front of six screens in "HopeMe." In this dynamic&#38;nbsp;landscape of screens, her body encounters multiple digital versions of itself. The performer's movements contrast and intertwine with the video sequences on the screens, creating a hybrid body that blurs the boundaries between the physical and the digital.

"HopeMe" is a performance that reflects on societal notions of female beauty and body images, exploring forms of self-presentation in the digital world. The hope for a more beautiful, better, more attractive, and more fitting body is particularly visible today as a social phenomenon in social media and online platforms. Beauty is performed in the digital realm, with people self-staging, observing, and evaluating each other. "HopeMe" examines the underlying mechanisms and asks: How do physical bodies change under the influence of digital (self-)representation? How do analog and digital bodies inform and transform each other? What societal ideal images emerge, and how can they be challenged?

In "HopeMe," the videos are projected onto a total of six screens, which are constantly rearranged, creating different spatial constellations. The body on stage is thus in constant interaction with digital image manipulations, abstract pixel landscapes, and microscopic shots of individual body parts. The digital recordings fragment the body or make it appear distorted and disintegrated through glitches.

In this process, ideal images are not only made visible but also deconstructed. On stage, the digital sphere and its malleability are transformed into a space where beauty ideals and norms can be transformed. Anna Anderegg's artistic practice focuses on the interplay between body and space, always questioning how social, urban, or architectural spaces influence the body, its movements, and its needs.

"HopeMe" is the third performative work in which the performance artist explores the feedback processes between the analog and digital worlds. She incorporates video sequences as a 'digital body' into her work. Anderegg understands the montage and projection possibilities of film material as part of the choreography. They offer the opportunity to shape, rearrange, and reflect on the body and movement in physical space.

		<description>#homies (2018)In #homies, three performers experience digital worlds and develop their own connections to new technologies. They animate an apartment and the virtual space at the same time. The movement vocabulary of the performance draws on male and female connoted poses and is supported by an atmospheric sound design. The audience is encouraged to think about digitization and virtuality as well as privacy and intimate space. #homies is a dance installation that consists of a loop and takes place inside an apartment.

		<description>Fragmented (2018)
To mark the 10th anniversary of Garage Museum in Moscow, Fragmented poetically highlights details of the Soviet modernist café that was redesigned by Rem Koolhaas and his OMA studio.Being surrounded by staged pictures on social media platforms, art lovers consume numerous fragmented images of urban identity every day. This constant interaction with images leaves little space for the imagination. In Fragmented, six dancers transport the two-dimensional aesthetics of pictorial self-representation into the museum space. Sometimes their bodies fall and leave a trace of what might have happened before. Other times motionless bodies melt into the spectacular architecture of the Museum, hinting at how they might look in motion. Architectural elements disrupt the unity of the dynamic picture, becoming a mask for the performers and fragmenting their figures. Their absence makes them present. And the series of transitional spaces, which do not usually attract museum visitors—corridors, corner rooms, walls, gaps between columns—becomes a trigger for the viewer’s imagination. Viewers are invited to move freely through the exhibition and public spaces. Fragmented is a commissioned artwork developed for Garage Museum in collaboration with local performers.

Performance (Trailer)

Movie (Trailer)

In ALONE TOGETHER, five performers invite the public to reflect on digital connectivity, online empathy, attention, isolation and absence in a multi-layered narrative.

 While the eyes of the performers linger through the digital windows on the happenings of the world, the viewers watch their disconnected bodies as they stare at their screens and gradually transform into hybrid living sculptures serving and glorifying the technological devices.&#38;nbsp;

 ALONE TOGETHER investigates the distraction with technology, consumerism and celebrity culture through a body of work that consists of a performance and a film. The performance takes place in an abstract space and a complex five-hour looped time structure. The performed actions are building a network space through which the audience can wander freely.

This work was comissioned for the Swiss Pavilion at the Gwangju Biennale, one of the most important contemporary art exhibitions in Asia.&#38;nbsp;

		<description>TAPE RIOT(2012)TAPE RIOT is built on the reality of urban space and the daily flow of those who inhabit it. Initially it merely causes the onlookers' gaze to shift slightly, prompting silent curiosity: Is this normal? Is this real? Two dancers disrupt the pace of passersby pushing the degree of dissociation still further. Lines are drawn splitting the space ... Are they defining a frame of reference or opening up perspectives to the beyond? Sounds intermingle and the roadsigns blend in; the traffic flow has switched direction. This dynamism triggers the strange sensation of having seen the urban space quite differently and with a smile... Did it change our way of looking at things? Or just our point of view?

		<description>SILVER BOOM&#38;nbsp;(2021)
SILVER BOOM is a performative intervention by senior women in public spaces. The piece questions the relationship between urban space, gender and age. The work is interested in the emergence of a collective consciousness through the celebration of experienced women in the urban landscape.The participatory performance deconstructs the norms of motion in the city and draws visibility to experienced citizens living among us. What can we as a society learn from these bodies? What wisdom and stories do these women have to tell us?
